Dhatu – Revive Kansa Artisans by lifestyle value addition

Kansa is as old as the hills or as old as the Bronze Age. It is a kind of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin and has been used for centuries in India for cooking and serving food. Kansa is recognized by its clear sound and temple bells are usually made of kansa which is probably why it is also called bell metal. The Ayurvedic lifestyle prescribes the use of certain metals in cooking or storing food in order to get trace metals and minerals like zinc, copper and iron directly. Metals are used a lot in making ayurveda medicines too – in ashes or bhasams, in cooking medicated oils as the goodness of the metal transfers into the food or medicine. Food plays an extremely important role in Ayurveda’s balancing of doshas and so does the vessel it is cooked in .There is both science and chemistry behind this thinking. There is tradition too.
Kansa artisans are on the decline as its rich tradition and value is being replaced by other alternatives like steel, plastic, ceramic, etc. In bid to revive this dying craft, Bhavyata Foundation supports the livelihood by awareness, exhibition and membership avenues to promote wide scale consumption.
